In prohibition-era Virginia three brothers, played by Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke pretty much run the moonshine business. The law knows who they are and what they do, but since they like drinking too, they turn a blind eye and allow the brothers to continue working. Gary Oldman, as a mob boss takes a shine to the brothers as they are being pursued by one of his enemies, the eyebrow-less corrupt Chicago cop played creepily by Guy Pierce.

Jack (LaBeouf) is the runt of the family, always trying to prove his worth to his brothers usually means that he goes off half cocked and fucks things up even more. Forrest (Hardy) is in charge of everything, he’s soft spoken often times seeming like a young Clint Eastwood with his grunts. While Howard (Clarke) drinks a lot and leads the cleanup crew with Forrest.

Lawless has very few flaws. 1931 Virginia was dirty and had little respect for authority. Everybody is on their own, but family sticks together and fights when they are wronged. Each action Forrest and Jack take are true to how they are portrayed. No action is without motivation and most of the time its revenged based. In this time, the lawbreakers are the good guys, even if it means blowing up a small shed from time to time.

Based on Matt Bondurant’s book on the lives of his grandfather and granduncles and adapted by Nick Cave, yes THAT Nick Cave, Lawless is an intriguing look into the lives of Virginian bootleggers and how the law, ironically drunk on their own power, were unable to stop them. How even in the early years of the 20th century that men saw something unjust and tried to change it back. Even at the expense of their lives.

3.5 bottles of moonshine out of 5

As a huge fan of the BBC, I have spent many a times combing through the British section of the DVDs in all the bookstores I visit, and eagerly await the return of such shows as Downton Abbey and Doctor Who. Perhaps the greatest amount of anticipation though comes with the anxious wait for the third series of Sherlock. As both the UK and the US wait for the sleuthing-duo’s return to the telly, the latest hint at Series 3 leaves the future of the show in question.

Series creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have recently revealed the words “Rat, Wedding, Bow”, hinting at the three Conan-Doyle stories used as the plotlines for the upcoming series, while also suggesting that the last episode of Series 3, presumably based off the last Sherlock Holmes story, “His Last Bow”, could spell the end of the show’s run.

As my inner Sherlock fan screams in frustration and demands for the show to continue, I also have to take a step back and think about what would be for the best.  Moffat and Gatiss work on both Sherlock and Doctor Who, two of the most beloved British shows in the United States. Creating a season of Sherlock takes up an immense amount of time, and while I hate to say it (and if I’m wrong, I’ll eat my hat), Doctor Who is the show from across the pond that has the strongest fan-base.

So where does that leave Sherlock? After Season Two’s dramatic and nail-biting cliffhanger, Moffat and Gatiss would have an enormous task to accomplish in continuing to up the stakes. Season Two was such a well-written and dramatic season that I feel that only one more season would be necessary to wrap up the show’s run. Some television shows start off fantastic in their early seasons but crumble in the following years, and I would hate to see Sherlock become such a show. A trilogy of seasons would provide a nice, well-rounded package of television that is fantastically written and filled with the drama and suspense that the American audience loves.

In the end, though I would love to see Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman portray their characters into their senior years (Sherlock would even be more disagreeable!), I am also looking forward to their upcoming and future projects, such as their roles in The Hobbit. Sherlock is ser to return in the fall of 2013, and while many fans (including myself) would hope for more episodes, Season 3 would whet our appetites and leave us with the happy thought that the mystery never truly ends and that Sherlock and Watson are still in 221B, waiting for the next adventure.

Ever wanted to see Shia Laboeuf have sex? And we don’t just mean simulated rated R-rated most-likely-a-butt-double sex, we’re taking real, unsimulated and even, possibly titillating sex. Well now, thanks to Lars Von Trier’s latest upcoming cinematic exploits, you, dear viewer, will have that opportunity to see Shia in all his glory (provided you haven’t already seen the Sigur Rós video, in which he also appeared in the buff).

Laboeuf, clearly long removed from his days as a Disney Channel star, reported the news himself that the actors currently involved in eccentric director Von Trier’s next film, The Nymphomaniac, will be actually be sexually performing on screen. “There’s a disclaimer at the top of the script that basically says, we’re doing it for real,” LaBeouf began telling to MTV News. ”And anything that is ‘illegal’ will be shot in blurred images. But other than that, everything is happening.”

Laboeuf also made mention that he and his costars, noted Lars Von Trier vets like Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg, are prepared to do “whatever is asked” of them, including “illegal things.” Von Trier intends to shoot the film in censored and uncensored versions. The Nymphomaniac will be released in two parts, unlike Von Trier’s previous two-parter Melancholia, and is slated for a 2013 release date.

Which actor are you most surprised to see bearing all for The Nymphomaniac? Are you shocked to see a director ask this of the beloved Louis Steven from the Even Stevens?
Our two favorite dunces are back! What seemed like flaky speculation earlier this summer has now become a definite statement: The Farrelly Brothers are writing and directing a sequel to their smash hit Dumb and Dumber. Despite a 19-year gap since the original film reached theaters, the Farrellys are committed to bringing life back into the universe of the characters played by Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels.

This news created a stir amongst filmgoers. We’re used to seeing Hollywood pump out sequels as a method of grossing more money for major studios; however, this project is fascinating because no studios were involved in this decision at all! The Farrellys approached New Line Cinema and Warner Brothers with the subject and both studios were tentative about the project. Jim Carrey even reported that they, “Showed a lack of enthusiasm.”

With this is mind, it proves the point that this is absolutely an organic Farrelly Brothers film. While an unenthusiastic studio may not be in the best financial interests of the film, the nature of the story should be brilliant if the Farrelly Brothers can recreate the same sense of outrageous humor which made the first one a purge of laughter.

Ordinarily, sequels disappoint viewers for lack of originality and the contrived placement of characters in situations which needn’t ever exist other than studios demanding that they do so for some nice $$$. Sometimes a sequel can be good, not great, like Shrek 2. But usually a sequel is repressed out of our memory like Speed 2: Cruise Control which holds a “rotten” 2% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

No one’s expecting Terminator 2 quality here! Comedies have a great advantage over other forms of genres in terms of sequels because people don’t really come for the plot. Everyone wants to laugh, and the Farrellys are comic auteurs of this era.

The plot of the sequel Dumb and Dumber To sounds like it has plenty of room to embellish with deranged humor. “The story revolves around the fact that one of them may have sired a child. They want to go and find the child because he’s having a kidney problem and he wants to ask him for one of his (father’s) kidneys.”

This plot establishes that the story will once again be a buddy-adventure with our heroes traveling great distances for a cause that seems noble but is most definitely stupid. The sequel should be met with excitement, not admonishment! From reading other news reports it seems as though the Farrelleys are putting their heart into getting this made against much opposition in their way. It’s almost like a reimagining of Moneyball—or shall we say “movie-ball.”

Jim Carrey is notable for turning down reprising roles in sequels (i.e. dropped out of Son of the Mask and Evan Almighty), yet through the heavy convincing of the Farrellys and co-star Jeff Daniels, Carrey finally agreed to reunite with the team. Considering how selective Carrey is in choosing his roles should suggest that this movie has something worthwhile.

The Farrelly’s plan to get the ball rolling fast. Super fast, actually. They plan on shooting later in 2012 and distributing the film in the spring of 2013. That seems like a rushed schedule and could possibly impact the quality of the film. However, the brother’s tandem is renowned for making several films almost every year. For instance from 2000-2001 Me, Myself & Irene, Osmosis Jones, and Shallow Hal all hit theaters.

With the heart and soul the Farrellys give to their films, the sequel, Dumb and Dumber To could have much to offer to giddy fans and comedy enthusiasts alike. Just think of the crude beauty of the original film…and then think how much funnier it could be seeing middle-aged men doing the same shenanigans.

September 25th officially marks the end of the first (and spectacular) run of Marvel comic-book films. The Avengers will be released on Blu-ray, as well as a larger 10-disc set entitled Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers Assembled, which includes all six movies, plus multitudes of extras. So, the question remains…what’s next? Let’s dive right in!

To begin, fans of The Avengers will be happy to know that director Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios have signed an exclusive three-year deal that will have Whedon working for Marvel until the release of The Avengers sequel in June of 2015. He will also be helming a television series based in the Marvel Universe that will potentially have tie-ins to several of the movies. As of yet, there are only rumors as to what or who the show will be about.

Next up are sequels. Marvel has already begun filming follow-ups to their original works with Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The third Iron Man film—which is set for release on May 3, 2013—sees Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle reprising their roles from previous installments. It also adds Ben Kingsley as villainous The Mandarin (Iron Man’s arch-nemesis in the comics). Shane King is directing this time, and if his previous work is any indication, he should do well, especially considering he’s worked with Downey before (on 2005’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).

In Thor: The Dark World, almost everyone from the first film will be returning to their roles. The most notable change is the addition of Christopher Eccleston as the film’s villain, Malekith. Additionally, Zachary Levi (of Chuck fame) will be playing Fandral, filling in for Joshua Dallas, who is unable to reprise the role due to a scheduling conflict with ABC’s Once Upon a Time. (Side note: Levi had secured the role in the original Thor film, but had to pull out due to conflicts with other projects.) Look for the Thor sequel in theaters on November 8, 2013.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (scheduled for release on April 4, 2014) has fewer confirmed details. However, Chris Evans will be back in the title role and Sebastian Stan is returning as James “Bucky” Barnes. I won’t say anything more on this as it could lead to potential spoilers for anyone who isn’t familiar with the comics. As of right now, Joe and Anthony Russo (known for directing a multitude of episodes of the hit show Community, as well as the upcoming Animal Practice) are in talks to direct this film, and it’s rumored that Anna Kendrick, Felicity Jones and Imogen Poots are front-runners for a leading role in the film as well.

In addition to a television show and four direct sequels (including The Avengers 2), Marvel has plans for two new films: Guardians of the Galaxy, which is slated for a 2014 release, and Ant-Man, which is based on the last comic-book Avenger and has been helmed by Edgar Wright. According to rumors, Wright’s film will begin shooting next year.
Based on information already gleaned from multiple interviews, the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con announcements and other sources, it will be very exciting to see where the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase Two takes us!

Karen O, frontman of the indie rock group the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, has recently written an original song for the ending credits of Disney’s highly anticipated stop-motion children’s film Frankenweenie, directed by Tim Burton. The song is titled “Strange Love” and will be included on Frankenweenie Unleashed!, a 14-track compilation inspired by the film.

During an interview with Rolling Stone, Karen O spoke of her inspiration and how her idea transformed into reality. “Tim [Burton] wanted an unconventional unconditional love song. My music inspiration came out of the same era of B movie fright film references sprinkled throughout the film.” She further explains her vision, the unique sound of the song, and her musical influences in the Tim Burton world; “ I went in the direction of exotica and calypso stylistically because it’s quirky, good vibes music… I remember Beetlejuice introducing me to the genius of Harry Belafonte’s calypso record so I wanted to give a nod to that too.”

This is far from Karen O’s first contribution to the sounds and stylings of the film industry. Over the past ten years she has collaborated with many famous artists such as Spike Jones, David Lynch, and the Flaming Lips. She composed the score for 2009’s Where the Wild Things Are, and co-wrote the Grammy Nominated song “All is Love” with Nick Zinner. Most recently she is heard contributing to the vocals to a cover of Led Zepplin’s “Immigrant Song” in the feature film, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Frankenweenie’s original motion picture soundtrack, composed by Grammy award winner Danny Elfman, will be available on September 25th in addition with Frankenweenie Unleashed!. Along side Karen’s “Strange Love,” Frankenweenie Unleashed! will feature songs from Neon Trees, Plain White Ts, Imagine Dragons, and many other diverse and popular artists.

Trailer Tuesday is a normally a column where Cinedork’s staff of writers guide you through the ABCs of new trailers, taking a look at what’s awesome, what’s bizarre, and what’s just cringe-worthy in upcoming movies. This week, Corwyn Johnson takes control of the trailers, adding some of his own insights as he breaks down a slew of new movies about killing lawmen, zombies, and Osama bin Laden.

DISCLAIMER: Trailer Tuesday writers have NOT seen the films, and are simply basing their opinions off of the movie trailers, casting rumors and internet chatter — these are NOT substitutes for our actual film reviews.

Due out August 31st, Lawless is a gangster film set during the Prohibition era. Based off the book The Wettest County in the World, this is a film that focuses on a family, the Bondurants, as they grow and expand an illegal moonshine operation. Starring Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, and Guy Pearce, the film focuses on both the growing operation and wealth of the brothers’ business, as well as the local law’s response, bringing in a hard nosed city “special agent” to shut the Bondurants down. The trailer makes the film feel like a spiritual successor to the 2009 Johnny Depp starrer, Public Enemies, but with a much better cast, and more focused direction. Lawless may the ability to surpass Public Enemies in every way. For that, it will receive an Awesome.

Due out September 14th, Resident Evil: Retribution is the latest film in the franchise that has clearly become an annual Milla Jovovich paycheck. In the latest installment of the Resident Evil, Jovovich’s Alice wakes up in an Umbrella Corporation facility. More of her “mysterious” past is revealed to her as she explores the compound. Eventually, the film sees Alice chasing Umbrella around the globe, fighting to save humanity from a virus set loose that turns anyone it infects to a mindless, flesh-eating zombie. The trailer shows flashes of Alice’s companions and allies from previous films, including ones who were supposedly dead, as well as the villain, Albert Wesker, who was supposed to have been killed off at the end of the last film. It makes a viewer wonder what exactly the director, Paul W.S. Anderson has in store for us… it also makes one cringe at the vast similarities to the previous installments. You can’t help but feel as though if this film franchise has been separate from the video games, it might have done well. As it is, the final verdict is Cringe-worthy.

From the Oscar winning director Kathryn Bigelow comes a film that will surely tap into American patriotism. Zero Dark Thirty is a tale of the decade long manhunt for Osama bin Laden, starting with 9/11 and ending with his death during a SEAL Team Six raid of his compound in May 2011. The trailer itself is very formulaic. It runs fast paced and has redaction lines running throughout it constantly as you see various clips of agents analyzing data, soldiers running around, and dialog implying the importance of the mission. It’s actually very reminiscent of a Bourne trailer, and we know that Bigelow is capable of handling military drama/suspense given that her last movie was The Hurt Locker (for which she won her Oscar). One would hope that, with Bigelow at the helm, this film does not become another The Green Zone. Still, for now, this trailer ranks itself at Awesome.

Bob’s Burgers, the best animated series currently on FOX (Sorry Simpsons… you had your run), is getting a sexy new guest voice actor playing a not so sexy appliance. Jon Hamm, of Mad Men and Superman look-a-like fame, will be playing the voice of a talking toilet on the animated comedy in the upcoming third season. According to show creator Loren Bouchard, Hamm’s part is “a kind of E.T. homage, but instead of an alien, it’s this high-end talking electronic toilet that falls off a truck and lands in the woods.” Gene befriends said toilet (for anyone who watches the show, that hypothetical makes total and complete sense) and becomes “kind of a love story between a boy and a toilet.”

This announcement comes after the news o a crossover between Bob’s Burgers and Archer, appearing on the latter. Both of those shows are lead by voice actor H. Jon Benjamin, whose notably deep, deadpan delivery is easy to recognize from role to role. On the episode of Archer, Sterling begins as Bob, making burgers at Bob’s restaurant, and in a Bourne Identity-like twist, he’s got the skills of a secret agent who forgets his identity while undercover.

Bob’s Burgers started off a little slow in its first season, but picked up in its second season, even receiving an Emmy nomination for Best Animated Series. For fans of the show, this means that Bob and his bizarre family will be sticking around for a little while longer. And landing a high profile, and highly respected actor like Jon Hamm (to play a toilet) can only help. As ridiculous, bizarre, and filled with inside jokes as Bob’s Burgers is, it’s one of the more clever animated series to appear on television, and it’s good to see that it’ll be sticking around or a little while longer.

Rock plays Mingus, who lives with Marion (Delpy) and each of their two kids from other relationships. The situation is a doozy: Marion’s dad, sister, and sister’s boyfriend (who’s also an ex-boyfriend of Marion’s) visit New York to attend a gallery show of Marion’s photographs and to meet Mingus. They all hole up in Marion and Mingus’ small apartment. Cross-cultural chaos ensues.

The film’s a small riot. Frenzied, hilarious shenanigans follow Marion’s father Jeannot (played by Delpy’s real-life father Albert Delpy), her sister Rose (Alexia Landeau, who cowrote the screenplay with Delpy), and the boyfriend Manu (Alex Nahon, also co-credited with the screenplay). They all co-starred in Delpy’s 2007 prequel 2 Days in Paris, where an American boyfriend (Adam Goldberg) descends into the family’s inner sanctum. Here they invade America. The uber-earthy, often outrageous Jeannot arrives at the airport with unpasteurized cheeses taped to his body, Rose walks around the apartment in various states of undress, and Manu is about as gruff and inappropriate as a Sasha Baron Cohen character. Rock’s character changes from an immune doesn’t-bother-me to a frustrated center of gravity going askew, to a guy who complains in monologues to a cardboard cutout of Barack Obama that’s a life-size piece of furniture in his study. Finally Mingus, who’s a Village Voice writer and radio talk show host, resorts to describing his significant other’s crazy family to his radio audience. Comics who can play the serious role (Robin Williams, Adam Sandler) bolster their acting repertoire while often surprising their fans. Here Rock plays it three-quarters straight and it’s perfectly nuanced. The Franco-American tensions are mussed up even further given Rock’s additional fish-out-of-water role as a black boyfriend.

Marion tries to keep her family in tow as they proceed to spread havoc in Marion’s building and elsewhere. She has her own photography show to worry about and there’s an odd auction which I’ll leave undescribed except to say it eventually involves Vincent Gallo, who plays himself (wait, doesn’t he always?) A scene with Delpy and a particularly persnickety art critic ends poignantly if chaotically. Dylan Baker’s around as a neighbor caught in Rose’s web of possible seduction.

America and France, comic opposites framed by the additional presence of a Chris Rock. There would be plenty here if Delay left it at that. She manages, however to tie in a warm and effervescent turn to the more serious once she brings to the film the unexpected theme of the passing of her mom, the French actress Marie Pillet. The more serious Delpy reached a crescendo in the excellent Richard Linklater films, Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, the latter which Delpy co-wrote the screenplay. Here she manages to combine madcap Woody Allen-esque comedy with the candor of self-realized semi-biography. Delpy, who now lives in L. A., keeps a dual citizenship. Amidst the laughter brought on here there lurks an outside-the-box approach to filmmaking, full of a robust duality all its own.

Despite successful scenes, the film is an illustration that merely finding an innovative approach to a hackneyed genre does not necessarily produce a fresh nor particularly cohesive result.

A film starring Rashid Jones and Andy Samberg, Celeste profiles a couple on the way to divorce court who are still very much codependent. Some novel stuff is offset by essentially a thin, erratic screenplay that too often veers off into loose-limbed detours. Jones’ reluctantly reenters the dating game after Samberg suddenly decides to marry a one-night stand who got pregnant. Her reactions are amusing and insightful at first, then run out of gas the more they’re repeated into the ground. The couples’ wear-it-like-a-placard friendship survives throughout the film and actually seems to intensify the more Samberg moves into his new relationship and the more Jones’ life gets complicated. A side story involves Emma Roberts as a teen starlet for whom Jones’ employer serves as publicist, and Jones at first as an “older woman” adversary and eventually as a nurturer/babysitter. A scandal that erupts involving a suggestive graphic in an important ad she places is about as believable as the tooth fairy. But at least Jones has a job. Her reluctance to bear the slacker Samberg’s kids is cited by her as reason for the breakup. Enough to make you flinch a little but it doesn’t help Samberg is about as emotive as a ramen noodle. When he finally stands up for himself it’s as if the Red Sea is parting. Our shock doesn’t last long. Before we know it we’re off to several scenes with co-screenwriter Will McCormack playing an amusing pot dealer friend to Jones, and Elijah Woods playing the obligatory gay co-worker/confidant.

Not all is shabby with this hard-trying effort co-written by Jones (the daughter QuIncy Jones and Mod Squad’s Peggy Lipton). Chris Messina (recently of Ruby Sparks, where he plays Paul Dano’s brother) is along for the ride as a guy who admittedly takes yoga classes to meet women. Yet he demonstrates a patient fondness for Jones and actually shows her a good time.

Good times are infrequent in Celeste and Jesse Forever. The void is occasionally filled with surgically precise snapshots of the actual emotions and nuances of a breakup between two people still very much in love. Too often, though, the scalpel goes flying off into a waiting room of ads with hidden penises, bimbo teen millionaires, and a patchwork of new cliches replacing the old ones.

Remember the first season, when dissolving a body in acid became a comedy of errors? It’s safe to say that those days are long gone. In one of the most sobering openings in the show’s history, Walt, Mike and Todd unearth a dead kid’s dirt bike and take it apart one piece at a time, so the evidence of last week’s crime can be erased. Once the bike is trashed, Todd uncovers a small hand from the mound of dirt, and Walt wordlessly prepares a barrel for the boy too. The kid’s name is Drew Sharpe, and he’ll be reported missing the next day. And it’s enough to make Jesse say enough is enough.

A lot of “Buyout” is devoted to Jesse and Mike’s attempts to escape from Walt’s clutches. Mike is getting in deeper and deeper with the DEA, so much so that they’re tailing him to the park while he spends the day with his granddaughter. He cons them into thinking he’s dropping a message under a trash can, and when Gomie goes to investigate, the note is a simple “F*ck you.” Mike knows when it’s time to leave a bad situation, and after voting to keep Todd in the game for the sole purpose of keeping an eye on him, Mike knows that this is about as bad as it gets. In his search for an exit, one that gives him enough money to cover the legacy costs, he decides to sell his share of the methylamine to “interested partners”, which basically comes down to Walt’s competitors. Jesse and Mike meet a guy named Declan in the desert, who wants to be sure that the “blue stuff” will be off the market. If Walt keeps cooking, then Mike and Jesse can’t make a deal. Basically, they’re trapped until Walt decides to stop. Jesse is unnerved by Walt’s casual suggestion that soul-searching can come later, and whistling while he works after a “heart to heart” about a kid who was murdered on their watch.

Meanwhile, Skyler is visiting her kids with Marie, and it’s clear she misses them very much, bursting into tears with Holly sitting in her lap. (Holly is really adorable as far as TV babies go, I msut say.) She seems extremely close to telling Marie everything. “There are things that…if I told you, you’d never speak to me again.” Marie thinks she’s alluding to her affair with Ted and says she has to “forgive herself.” Skyler is immediately enraged and just goes with it, all her gumption deflated. It’s almost a clever little nod to all the ridiculous folk out there who can forgive Walt for killing people and making meth and being a morally bankrupt abusive bastard, but can’t seem to get past Skyler having an affair.

Jesse tries to make a much more personal appeal to Walt, asking the question I’ve been waiting for them to return to since this season began: why is Walt still doing this? Does he even remember? Jesse tells him that he remember the exact amount Walt needed to make for his wife and kids before he died, somewhere around $730,000. Jesse says that if Walt takes the five million dollars he could get from the methylamine, all the danger and worry could be over, and he could continue having a normal life. But that’s Jesse’s mistake, because if all Walt wanted was to be normal, then none of this would have happened in the first place.

Walt decides to tell Jesse the story about how Gray Matter began. Gray Matter is the company alluded to in the first season, the one with Walt’s rich genius friends who wanted to pay for Walt’s treatment. Because of “personal reasons”, Walt took a buyout of $5,000 and left. Today, the company is worth billions. “With a B.” This would be humiliating for anyone, but especially Walt, who sees it as selling his “potential”, and “his kids’ birthright.” Walt lost a chance at greatness, and he’s not about to sell out and go back to being a mere mortal. “You asked me if I was in the meth business or the money business.” He says to Jesse, in the confines of his own home, once a strictly forbidden place when it came to Walt’s plans. “I’m in the empire business.”

What follows is one of the most painfully funny scenes in the history of Breaking Bad’s long record with black comedy. Skyler arrives home with groceries just as Jesse is leaving. Jesse tries his best to leave quietly, awkwardly complimenting Skyler in her home, but Walt bullies the both of them into joining him for dinner. At the table, the Whites stare balefully at each other while Jesse tries his very best to make polite conversation, but mostly just fumbles with his compliments and compares eating frozen lasagna to eating scabs. After Skyler exits with her new best friend, her bottle of white wine, Walt tells Jesse about Skyler’s declaration of waiting for his cancer to return. And piles on how the kids are living with Hank and Marie. “This business is all I have left. And you want to take it away from me.” Jesse is so stunned that this is even taking place, and just shows much Walt enjoys exercising control over the people around him.

So he traps Jesse emotionally and makes it impossible for Mike to take his pay and leave. And even when Mike binds him to the radiator with a zip-tie, he burns his way out of it with copper wiring and all the desperation of an animal with it’s leg caught in a trap. Mike and Saul concoct a bogus lawsuit against the DEA, because of Hank and Gomie’s “harassment”, to give Mike the time to sell the methylamine and get out. But when he arrives back at the office, it’s gone, and Jesse is quick to try and intervene, saying that Walt’s plan will give everyone what they want. Mike stops himself from shooting Walt in the head (bad idea. More half measures.) But Walt knows he has both of them, and can get them to do whatever he wants. “Everybody wins.”

There are only two more episodes left for this short season, and with new meth dealers moving in on the fringes, one can only suspect that Walt will seize the reins of this operation as tightly as he can. Someone should tell Walt how all those cowboy stories really ended.

[caption id=”attachment_7619” align=”alignleft” width=”50” caption=”Jacob “JJ” Jones”][/caption]

Film fans may hate me for saying this, but this upcoming winter looked like it would be just as cold at the box office as the temperatures outside. From Peter Jackson’s 48 frame-per-second adaptation of the first third of The Hobbit, and a new adaptation of Les Mis, nothing has really caught my eye. Sure, Quentin Tarantino’s new film is coming out, but I planned to save myself $10 by looping myself shouting “fuck” on my iPod while playing Grand Theft Auto.Â

But there was one diamond in the rough: Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Luhrmann, the academy award nominated director of Moulin Rouge! showed the world that he could craft great tales of bohemian young love and socioeconomic class struggles; thus, making the 49-year-old director the perfect choice to direct an adaption of that classic novel we all were forced to read in middle school English.

My original response to the trailer could best be described as a nerd-gasm: the mise-en-scène was ornate and spectacular, the cast was perfect and star-studded, and the film seemed to have a aura of class and sophistication around it: just as that film should. But now, fans of the book are left to deal with their huge case of “anticipointment,” as the film’s release was delayed until Summer 2013.

The press release issued by Warner Brothers explained that film needed more time so Luhrmann could finish up the film’s 3D effects and the composer of the project, Craig Armstrong (who also composed for The Moulin Rouge!), could finish his original score. To be fair, those are serious aspects of the film that need time to complete, but I still can’t help but feel upset that I have to wait another six months extra to see this movie. Therefore, I share with you, dear readers, my list of five things to do to pass the time until we finally see The Great Gatsby:

1. REREAD THE NOVEL

I will most likely be the first of my friends to see the movie, and I can already anticipate people asking me how the movie was. I want to be able to tell them with 100% certainty, with both the novel and the book fresh in my mind, that, “the novel was better.” Books that I like are rarely translated into film, which means I’m usually not the guy who gets to use the “the novel was better” line, and I look forward to every bit of literary elitism I can squeeze out of this release.

Also, If any major filmmakers who happen to read this blog would like to adapt other books that I’ve read, like any David Foster Wallace books or Noam Chomsky essays, I’d be more than happy to tell my friends that your films were also subpar to their literary equivalents. But don’t let that hold you back from finally adapting Infinite Jest to film.

2. BUILD UP A TOLERANCE TO GRAIN ALCOHOL

It was decided upon my first viewing of the trailer that to experience this film in true 1920’s style, I would have to bootleg in some grain alcohol. The only problem with this plan is Everclear is 190-proof, and with my usual alcoholic orders being either PBR or a cosmo (no, really. I love cosmos), I’ll probably get quite drunk. It’d also be smart to exhibit a certain amount of class while watching this film, and it’s very hard to look classy while being escorted out by the police for public intoxication. I only know this from experience, and I’d just like to say I apologize to everyone who was at that TGI Friday’s when I gained that experience.

3. FIND THE PERFECT GIRL FOR THE PERFECT PICKUP LINE

Imagine you’re a girl, or if you are already a girl, imagine I’m standing across from you in a bar. Now, imagine I pull two tickets to an early screening of The Great Gatsby out of hammerspace. Then, I look you straight in the eye and whisper seductively, “hey babe. Would you want to be the Daisy to my Jay?” If you’re not already turned on, there’s clearly something wrong with you. The only way this won’t work is if it leads to a thought-provoking conversation about Jay’s character, and questioning whether Jay loved Daisy, or if Jay was a chauvinistic bastard who only used Daisy as a status symbol. I’ll just cross my fingers it works.

4. LEARN TO DANCE THE CHARLESTON

While I know that the film is not going to allow dancing in the aisles the same way The Rocky Horror Picture Show accommodates it, I still plan to become more in tune with the music of the 1920’s. And what better way than to learn the dance! There are also the added benefits of learning a dance move that is not skanking (the dance traditionally reserved for ska shows) and losing some weight, which will help me with that pick up line from before.

5. WATCH SOME NETFLIX INSTANT

If the wait for the film is an extra 6 months (roughly 180 days), then I can watch 2,880 films on Netflix instant to kill the added time I will have to wait for this film. So beginning on Christmas day of this year, I will begin watching 2,880 movies. If you would, in solidarity, like to join in but don’t know where to begin, here is a whole list of great films you can watch on Netflix:Â http://cinedork.com/2012/08/02/editorial-top-10-awesome-obscure-films-on-netflix-instant/

And no, I have no shame.

It’s about time Ahhhnold stopped playing politics and started playing with guns again! Unlike most comebacks, this one looks to be warmly welcomed. The Last Stand is set to star Schwarzenegger as Sheriff Owens, a big tough Austrian man who left his post at the LAPD to fight what little crime there is in the small border town Sommerton Junction. Things get a little crazy after the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin escapes from FBI custody in a specifically outfitted car with a hostage and an army of gang members that’s furiously headed for the Mexican-American border. Because where is the most notorious drug kingpin headed? Well… the border… but it just so happens that Arnold’s small town is in the way! Of course! So who’s gotta save the day? Arnold Schwarzenegger!! The biggest, baddest, most Austrianest Sheriff you’ll ever find along the border.

Despite Arnold’s aging, and most comeback action roles feeling… desperate? … The Last Stand actually looks pretty fun. As big as Arnold’s star is, this film doesn’t feel like it’s all about him or his comeback. It feels like a movie with a plot that any older action hero could have played. The studios had this to say about Arnold: “Arnold Schwarzenegger will bring incredible magnetism to this complex but classic role. When he came on the screen in ‘The Expendables,’ it always electrified the audience. In this film, the Sheriff Owens character grapples with some really tough stuff, but ultimately triumphs, and we knew he’d truly elevate this high octane ride.”

While it’s easy to jump to the conclusion that this movie will suck simply because of Arnold’s age, this film clearly isn’t taking itself too seriously and is just looking to have fun with action for once. It’s disappointing that Hollywood can’t churn out another great action star for this generation, but it’s great to see Arnold Schwarzenegger holding a shotgun again.

Are you looking forward to The Last Stand? Does it just feel like a desperate attempt to get the Governator back into the action (pardon the pun)? Or are you more excited for The Expendables 2? Let us know in the Comments section below!!

Sparkle is the remake of the 1976 film of the same name. It’s the typical story of a teenage girl trying to follow her dream to become a star. She is of course held back by all the things you would expect her to be in a movie like this. She has an overly conservative Church-going mother, a paralyzing fear she isn’t good enough, and of course there are the twists and turns on the road to fame. This is a story that’s definitely been done before (pardon the pun, since it’s a remake) but it could have made for a solid film nonetheless. Where Sparkle falls apart is in the execution.

The film just feels disjointed and doesn’t seem to know where it and its characters are going. The relationships and emotions feel plastic, and the best example of this is the relationship between Sparkle’s sister named, well… Sister, and the character Satin Struthers. Satin just whisks Sister away by offering her loads of money. She then ditches her boyfriend for Satin despite being on the road to success, and it seeming like a terrible idea at the time. Satin then marries Sister after a short time.

This also seems to be a theme in the movie because every love interest seems to try to tie the knot after barely knowing each other. Soon after they are married Sister develops a drug habit and Satin starts beating her. All these things just kind of happen. There isn’t really any motivation for the characters to be doing well any of this.

Sparkle’s other sister Dee then accidently kills Satin when Satin tries to beat sister again. Sister then decides to take the blame and is sent to jail. All the time this happens the characters seem to not really care or only care briefly. The acting just seems so unnatural and unbelievable that the only rational most of the characters have seems to be that it was written in the script.

Characters like Sparkle’s mother, played by Whitney Houston, have strong opinions and then change them at the drop of the hat. Sparkle’s mother spends the whole time in this film, as you would expect, not believing in her dream and warning her about the dangers of fame. Then at the end she just changes her mind and shows up for her final performance! It makes for an experience that seems unpolished and honestly more like a made for TV movie.

There really aren’t any redeeming qualities to it except for a good soundtrack. The movie falls apart in the plot, the acting, and even the directing with some bizarre shot choices. The movie just seems amateurish and lazy. I wouldn’t see it unless you are a big fan of Jordan Sparks and want to support her acting career or are very desperate for a movie about Mo Town.

On the infamous Cinedork/Pretentious Film Najors 5-star scale, Sparkle gets 1 Motown Singer out of 5.

After Coraline, something big was expected from the people at Laika Studios. They had just managed to make the best piece of stop-motion animation I had seen since The Nightmare Before Christmas (excluding Community’s season 2 Christmas episode “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas”). And with Paranorman, Laika Studios did not disappoint.

ParaNorman tells the simple story of a strange young child, Norman, who is just outside of the norm his small town is used to. On the surface Norman is a fairly average kid with a great interest in the macabre and an overactive imagination. Unbeknownst to the townspeople, these “quirks” of Norman’s are very real and often force him into a world of visual wonder and humorous outcast moments, before they take a darker turn when an old witch’s curse (that must be tamed once a year) finally comes to pass. The town is faced with defending itself against a small gang of zombies, and facing it’s own, small-minded prejudices as they’re lost in a new world that Norman regularly inhabits. Norman must rise to the occasion and save his town from the curse, while also protecting and helping the ghostly souls of those caught in between the ensuing battle of the alive and the undead. The film also offers a brilliant twist on the witch’s curse angle of the story, but I won’t spoil such great storytelling here.

Now onto what made the film so much fun to watch. The cast does a great job, but it’s Casey Affleck who really shines in the role of bone-headed jock Mitch. Affleck provides a lot of laughs and delivers one of the best comic-relief performances of the year. Kodi Smit-McPhee is also good in the lead as he brings an almost natural strangeness to a role that requires such understanding and confidence, but also fear and insecurity.

Aside form the solid work of the cast, ParaNorman excels in many other areas of filmmaking as well. Chief among them would be the absolutely striking visual work made possible by the animators at Laika. There’s almost never a dull moment or lull in the action thanks to the wonderful work by all the animators involved. The set pieces and meticulous design make this one of the most visually appealing movies so far this year. Jon Brion also does some great work with the score, it isn’t over-the-top and it doesn’t stand out but it perfectly sets the mood throughout the film.

ParaNorman is in many ways a thoughtful love letter to the films of horror-comedy pioneers such as Joe Dante and John Landis. Co-directors Chris Butler and Sam Fell seem to have a great knowledge of the genre’s limits and strengths, as well as the classics of the horror-comedy genre. It may parody these classics at certain points during the film, but it’s done with a lot of heart and sincerity making the film all the more enjoyable. ParaNorman is a wonderful, creepy throwback to the classics of the horror-comedy genre, but of course it’s not without its flaws.

One of these flaws would be the predictability of the storyline throughout (aside from some moments in the third act), the structure and plot sometimes moves in obvious directions in order to complete the story or capitalize on big laughs. However this never really feels like a true problem as the film remains very entertaining throughout. Another flaw some might find with the film would be that it never quite captures that powerful and ominous feel (outside of some moments in the third act) of a movie like Coraline, of course ParaNorman is a different kind of animal and completely welcoming of the supernatural.

ParaNorman is enjoyable and interesting for both children and adults, possibly one of the most important aspects to consider when critiquing an animated film especially one like this. The overall message of the film about accepting yourself and accepting those around you is an old one, but used perfectly here. Both kids and parents will enjoy the themes of self-confidence, overcoming adversities (both as a child and as an adult), and family that are greatly developed throughout the film.

On the infamous Cinedork/Pretentious Film Majors 5-star scale, Paranorman gets 3.5 severed heads out of 5.

Adding some of our own insights, we assess what to expect. This week, Chikira, Lauren and Nick break down an awesome, bizarre, and cringe-worthy slew of new movies about turning 40, haunted blondes, and unstable relationships.

DISCLAIMER: Trailer Tuesday writers have NOT seen the films, and are simply basing their opinions off of the movie trailers, casting rumors and internet chatter — these are NOT substitutes for our actual film reviews.

[caption id=”attachment_6997” align=”alignleft” width=”50” caption=”Lauren Clay”][/caption]

I’ve been excited for This is 40 since I first heard about the project. Seeing the trailer has only added to my anticipation. It opens with Paul Rudd’s Pete contemplating life without his current wife, and potential bliss with a wife number two. Rudd is one of the few actors that can pull off dialogue like this without seeming morbid (and without looking like an asshole), so kudos to Judd Apatow for playing on his strengths. Leslie Mann’s way of interrogating people is back in full force—she tiptoes the line between nutcase and humorous, but she does it well.

One thing I love about this couple is how they balance each other out: one is a little maniacal and on-edge, and the other is goofy and laid-back, but it works. Maude and Iris Apatow added some great one-liners to Knocked Up, and now that they’re both a little older, I’m hoping their dad throws them more screen time. I’m excited to see Rudd and Mann dealing with the teenage-daughter dynamic (or should I say Mann dealing with it—anyone else notice Rudd casually slipping out the room as soon as he heard his teen open her mouth? Classic dad move). One downside (in my opinion) is Megan Fox, but here’s to hoping that her role in the film is as limited as her appearance in the trailer. And finally, it wouldn’t be the (sort of) sequel to Knocked Up without Paul Rudd ingesting some type of drug—and if it’s half as good as him and Seth Rogen shrooming in Vegas, then I look forward to the new drug-fueled scene (and based on Pete thinking his wife is a rodent while walking around with a starfish in his tighty whities, it will be). Add in Melissa McCarthy, Jason Segal, John Lithgow and Albert Brooks, and I’m even more excited for December 21st. Awesome.

Audiences better prepare for yet another from installment in the Paranormal Activity saga. Just when you thought it was over, here comes Paranormal Activity 4. In the most recent trailer viewers are greeted with a rundown of some of the more famous and favored moments of the past three films that led to the birth and capture of the infant child we all know as Hunter. Now that the audience is caught up in the chronological order of events, the series can move on from Katie and her haunted family.

We open onto the frame of a blonde, young girl looking into a camera. The following sequences look familiar, with the silent, empty home at night and a random light, eerily flickering into existence. There are the unassuming individuals (this young girl and her mother, with the camera operator still a mystery) plagued by strange occurrences in their home. This must all be due to the new neighbor, but does this trailer bring anything new to the viewers for the exception of a new face? Hunter is back with his demonic guardian in tow as the last thirty seconds of this trailer quickly slips into panic as lights are thrown off and a bad Internet connection stops the young girl mid sentence. It appears that suspense and screams aided by shaky, hand-held camera operation is arriving this fall, right on time for the month of October. Aren’t these trailers always Bizarre.

[caption id=”attachment_7703” align=”alignleft” width=”50” caption=”Nick Popyack”][/caption]

This is obligatory for me to say, simply because I am this kind of person: Every single character in this trailer walks.

… Get it?

Cause the movie’s called Nobody Walks… Do you get it or not?

Ok, let’s get serious. Nobody Walks is director Ry Russo-Young’s fourth film, third full-length feature. She’s done independent work so far, and most of her films have had some critical acclaim. So when the trailer screams at you at how acclaimed she is, and yet you don’t know who the hell she is, don’t worry — it’s because she’s only won awards at film festivals so far. What I can gather from the trailer is there is a love rhombus-shaped-thing going on between a man (John Krasinski), his wife (Rosemarie DeWitt), his wife’s friend (Olivia Thirlby) and his wife’s patient (Justin Kirk). Things look like they are going to spin completely out of control and will inevitably end in heartbreak, but will this be a movie that’s worth your time? I mean, it’s not like this premise hasn’t been shown before, and the film is only 83 minutes long… The only way I think this movie will do well will be if Russo-Young can make you care about the characters enough; however, I get the sense that there is a great chemistry between Krasinski and Thirlby, which makes me excited to see this October 12th limited release. Awesome.

The thrilling story of enhanced operative Jason Bourne is continued, though without Jason Bourne, and subsequently, without actor Matt Damon. But new lead Jeremy Renner handles the responsibility of taking over the franchise, and does it well.

The Bourne Legacy, the fourth film in the Bourne series, takes place alongside events that occured in The Bourne Ultimatum and serves as an introduction to Aaron Cross (Renner), a field agent under Operation Outcome. Cross becomes targeted for termination when, in the wake of Bourne going rogue, the CIA decides to dispose of its other black ops programs; however, Cross is able to escape his execution and sets out to expose the crimes of his superiors.

Damon’s missing presence is the most glaring difference in Legacy, though not the only one. The film also marks the departure of director Paul Greengrass, who had helmed the previous two Bourne films. But the film ultimately does not suffer from the turnover, as screenwriter Tony Gilroy, who has written all of the Bourne films to date, took up the reigns as director for this installment. It is for this reason that Legacy still feels like a Bourne film even though the titular character never appears on screen.

It also helps that the new cast is up to the challenge of filling in that whole created by Bourne’s absence. Besides Renner, Rachel Weisz appears as Dr. Marta Shearing, an Outcome Agent scientist who helps Aaron Cross as he searches for a new supply of chems that are the source of his increased strength and intelligence. Weisz’s character is intended as a potential love interest for Renner’s Cross, but their dynamic manages to be endearing without taking over the rest of the story. Edward Norton plays Eric Byer, the film’s primary antagonist who is hunting down Cross. While Norton pulls of the intimidating presence very well, he does not really add anything to the story besides barking orders at his inferiors.

The film does have a few other problems as well. It is slow to get the story going in the beginning, and it leaves those watching restless as they wait for the action sequences that are a trademark of the Bourne series, as they are introduced to Cross’ character. Once the story finally does pick up though, it never really reaches its peak in the third act. The result is a film that builds up Byer’s hunt for Cross but includes no direct confrontation and an abrupt ending. Obviously the film is setting up for sequels, but that’s all it really amounts to.

Still, fans of the series will enjoy this film, and as it intends, it leaves people wanting more. It is debatable whether or not Hollywood needs more sequels, or whether or not yet another Bourne film is needed. But, if they’re just as well done as this one, if not slightly better, and with the promise of Damon’s possible return, moviegoers won’t mind.

On the Cinedork/Pretentious Film Majors infamous five star scale The Bourne Legacy earns three chems out of five.
